What Hem & Howl makes
We publish illustrated, no-sew-forward Halloween costume ideas built around ordinary objects: a dark hoodie, a clean box, an old umbrella, or a forgotten throw. Our favorite projects are recognizable from across the room and adaptable to what you already own.
The magazine is a creative and informational resource. We do not sell costumes, process orders, rank products for profit, or require readers to create accounts.
Our editorial process
Every guide begins with a simple silhouette and a realistic materials list. Before publication, we review the idea against three questions:
- Can the costume be explained in one clear sentence?
- Can the main feature be made with ordinary craft supplies and straightforward steps?
- Can the wearer see, move, and adjust the finished piece comfortably?
We write time estimates as approximations and flag steps where an adult should assist. Our safety notes are reviewed alongside tutorial updates.
Corrections and useful feedback
If something seems unclear or inaccurate, email us with the page title, the step involved, and what you expected to happen. A short description of the material you used can help us understand the issue.
We review specific correction requests, test wording against the guide, and update the page when needed. We may keep a brief editorial record of substantive corrections. Please leave out sensitive documents and unnecessary personal details.
Accessibility and reading comfort
The site uses semantic headings, descriptive illustration text, visible keyboard focus, responsive layouts, and reduced-motion support. Interactive choices are native buttons, and no costume guide depends on color alone.
If a part of the site is difficult to read, navigate, or operate, tell us which page and device or browser you used. We welcome specific accessibility notes and will consider them in future revisions.
Pitch a future transformation
We are always collecting ideas for the next closet raid. The best suggestions name one ordinary object and one unexpected character: “a striped towel becomes a very polite ghost,” or “a laundry basket becomes a deep-sea creature.”
By sending an idea, you give us permission to consider it for editorial inspiration. Please do not send confidential concepts or work you do not have permission to share. We cannot promise publication or individual feedback on every suggestion.
